The theatre is home to the North Carolina Dance Theater and features Charlotte’s Symphony and Opera, musical theatre, popular music, touring productions as well as lectures and films. Acoustical challenges faced were isolation from heavy downtown urban traffic and from an independently programmed pre-function space. The building has a lecture hall on the lower level which is also acoustically isolated from the theatre above. The roof-top mechanical system included one of the first installations of a particularly quiet air handler that utilizes an array of propeller fans rather than a single centrifugal fan, thereby reducing duct-borne and vibration noise.
